I do not believe in God but I do believe in a better purpose and an ethical way of being.
We have posted before on Rowan Williams’ important interventions in the Climate Change debate and his comments on the (im)morality of excessive consumption. He has spoken again. It is frustrating that we are seeing leadership from the Lords Spiritual but still a fundamental lack of delivery from the Lords Temporal on the most urgent issue of our times.
To continue the religious theme, I once heard the late Hugo Grynn quote Father Niermeyer: ‘ask not where was God in the gas chambers of Auschwitz; ask instead, where was man?’.
To draw any paralells with the Shoah is inevitably uncomfortable and occasionally challenging. But while there is a moral and spiritual vacuum that needs to be filled right now, it is with Man and Woman – not God – that the answers proerly lie.
